The Post on dropping Get Fuzzy

Following yesterday's announcement of the addition of Wumo, Michael Cavna digs a bit deeper into why Get Fuzzy was selected to be dropped. The comments in the first article are also worth reading.

Halloween comic from Andrew Cohen

Cartoonist Andrew Cohen has a new, free mini-comic for Halloween. Check it out online (sample page, below). Cohen is also the artist-in-resident tonight and Saturday morning, for the MAGIC BULLET exhibit at Artisphere. He says he should have a few printed copies of the new mini, “Howzit Funnies: A Light-Hearted Comic for Dim-Witted Souls,” and some cards of “Aunt Elizabeth,” while they last.

Dear Mike,

STORE SIGNING this Sunday!

Sunday, November 3rd from 12-4 meet Chris Giarrusso!  He is the writer/artist of G-Man.

"Here is an absolute delight, a volume that will be shelved with children's titles, but should definitely be sought out by superhero lovers of any age. The visual style is completely charming, creating an amusingly detailed world that young readers can explore over and over."

With Halloween just around the corner pick up a great Zombie Game to play with friends!

The Walking Dead Board Game: The Best Defense

is a cooperative board game in which players take on the roles of Rick, Glenn, Daryl, Michonne, and other characters. The Survivors must defend four key locations from Walkers - the Farm, the Prison, the Town and the Highway - in order to stay alive. The game board is assembled at random for each game, providing for variability in the locations; a 25-card resource deck - containing either Equipment, Allies, Food or Ammunition - is placed at random on one of the locations.Walkers and other calamities are triggered in different locations by a 48-card Event deck (every card is unique!), which players draw from each round. They must then figure out how to minimize the effects of these Events, using dice to resolve combat and determine the outcome of some events. Survivors can work together to combine their combat abilities or split up to cover more ground. If the Survivors don't clear the Walkers out of a location, they'll lose resources - and if any resource deck runs out, the players lose the game. Thus, players need to keep the Walkers at bay while not using up too many resources themselves.

Unlike most cooperative games,

The Walking Dead Board Game: The Best Defense

includes a leadership role that a player can take for one or more rounds. Each player character has a unique leadership ability that provides a bonus while that character is in charge.
The Walking Dead Board Game: The Best Defense
includes two gameplay modes. In the "Beginner" mode, players share all information on their Event cards so that the leader and others can take everything happening in the game into consideration. In "Expert" mode, players may

not

share their Event cards, which means that leaders might make decisions that are detrimental to other players - but those players can defy the leader (for a cost) and make their own moves. Why would they do this?In addition to just trying to stay alive, each player has a secret "Ulterior Motive" card that specifies a mission for that player. If he completes that mission, then he earns a partial victory, even if the Survivors as a group would otherwise lose. The Ulterior Motive cards are recommended only for advanced players who like a bit of conflict in their co-operative games.

Twenty-five years since THE SANDMAN changed the landscape of modern comics, Neil Gaiman's legendary series is back!

THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE heralds New York Times best-selling writer Neil Gaiman's return to the art form that made him famous, ably abetted by artistic luminary JH Williams III (BATWOMAN, PROMETHEA), whose lush, widescreen images provide an epic scope to The Sandman's origin story. From the birth of a galaxy to the moment that Morpheus is captured, THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE will feature cameo appearances by fan-favorite characters such as The Corinthian, Merv Pumpkinhead and, of course, the Dream King's siblings: Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Destiny.

Comics you may not know about but should!

REX, ZOMBIE KILLER #1

REX, ZOMBIE KILLER tells the story of a hyper-intelligent Golden Retriever named Rex, a sign language-speaking gorilla, and a small pack of animals making a perilous cross-country journey to find safety...and a home.

Rex is trying to reach the doctor who raised him, but the doctor's been relocated to an underground military bunker in Nevada," Anderson said. "So even if they make it across a zombie-infested California, there's not necessarily a cozy fireplace waiting for them."

Issue #1 picks up from the One-Shot issue from 2012, and will make a great jumping-on point for new readers.

REX, ZOMBIE KILLER #1 is written by Rob Anderson (MY LITTLE PONY: SPIKE MICRO, GREAT ZOMBIES IN HISTORY) with interior and cover art by DaFu Yu (GRIMM FAIRY TALES, WONDERLAND ANNUAL), interior colors by Juan Romera, cover colors by Kevin Volo, letters and design by E.T. Dollman, and edited by Paul Allor (TMNT: FUGITOID MICRO, ORC GIRL).

October owl

Cartoonist Andrew Cohen is back to occasionally drawing some feathered friends. His most recent post on his blog is a dark-eyed owl, just in time for Halloween. BTW, Andrew will be at the Artisphere this Thursday as the final artist in resident for the Comics Making Workshop/Magic Bullet exhibit in the Works in Progress Gallery.

'Magic Bullet' thank-you card

The D.C. Conspiracy mails thank-you cards to folks who advertise its semi-annual Magic Bullet comics newspapers. For the current issue, MB #7--which has a Halloween theme--local cartoonist Matt Rawson did a Halloween illustration for the thank-you card. (It is loosely based on the Universal monsters chalk wall drawing he did this fall at Artisphere in Arlington, Va., as part of the D.C. Conspiracy's Comic Making Workshop and MB exhibit, which ends next weekend).

Events next week sponsored by Fantom Comics

Fantom Comics is hosting a discussion--one of its regular, informal, coffee house chats--on Oct. 28 at Chinatown Coffee from 7-9 p.m. The book: Watchmen. "Who watches the Watchmen? This month, we do. Alan Moore's subversive work on the perils of superhero power in the hands of the righteous continues to shape our understanding of the role of superheroes in a cynical and broken world. If you've ever read Watchmen or was looking for an excuse to read it, now's the time!"

Fantom Comics is also teaming with Fridge Gallery, which is hosting a Halloween Arty Party. "Come for the cosplay and stay for the party. Deejay Oso Fresh will be rocking the turntables all night and the Costume Contest takes place at 10 p.m. (with $100 Fantom Comics shopping spree as a prize).  We will have cool prizes, a raffle and giveaways all night long. No cover charge!"
