"We are so honored and delighted that Small Press Expo has chosen the Pratt Library as this year's recipient of their Graphic Novel Gift," said Carla D. BCC Artbook 2012BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - September 4, 2012 - The Baltimore Comic-Con is proud to announce the first Baltimore Comic-Con Yearbook, celebrating the creators appearing at the show.  This book of art features some of our guests interpreting the Liberty Meadows characters, sometimes in conjunction with their own creations, in a celebration of creator-owned properties.

As a bonus, we have a scavenger hunt of sorts. When you buy the book, you'll get a list of our 36 contributors and their table numbers. Get 15 of them to sign it, and come back to the booth for your choice of an added print by either Joseph Michael Linsner or Barry Kitson. Get 20 signatures and receive BOTH prints!

Liberty Meadows was created by Frank Cho and first published in 1997, launching in newspapers internationally.  This year marks the 15th anniversary of Liberty Meadows, having seen print in book, comic strip, and digital formats.  "Frank has always been a fan and a friend of the Baltimore Comic-Con," said Marc Nathan, show promoter for the Baltimore Comic-Con. "We are very thankful to Frank for his willingness to trust his characters with our other guests and friends, as well as his continued support of the Baltimore Comic-Con."

The art created for the 2012 Baltimore Comic-Con Yearbook celebrating 15 years of Frank Cho's Liberty Meadows will be auctioned at this special event! Don't miss this opportunity to own original art featuring Frank's characters as depicted by artists including Frank Quitely, Brandon Peterson, Gene Ha, David Petersen, Bernard Chang, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Tom Raney, Billy Tucci, Steve Conley, Thom Zahler, Craig Rousseau, Frank Cho, and many others!

I ran across this photograph at work today. The comic books visible are all Dell - Donald Duck, Porky Pig, Tarzan and Tweety & Sylvester. Note the spinner rack says Buy Approved Comics and has a picture of the Comic Code Authority seal. Also note there's a girl reading the comics, but she moved when the picture was taken so we can't tell what she's looking at.

Sept: 15-16: Lost Art Books at Small Press Expo

From: Joseph Procopio

SMALL PRESS EXPO 2012
Sept. 15-16

Dear friends,

As some of you know, Ellen and I are taking LOST ART BOOKS on the road!

Fortunately, it's a short road, ending in Bethesda, Maryland, where you'll find this year's Small Press Expo (SPX). I've attended this convention for the past dozen years, and Ellen and I started exhibiting books from our press at SPX in 2010. I think it's the best show of its kind anywhere, and everyone I've ever convinced to attend has had a good time, whether they know one end of a graphic novel from another. Trust me, it's where the cool kids are gonna be...

When we exhibit at SPX, I always try to use the occasion to debut our latest book, and this year is no exception. Many years in the making, this year's show marks the release of "The Lost Art of Heinrich Kley, Volumes 1 & 2." If you haven't heard anything about this project, go to our site and watch the book's video trailer (http://www.picturethispress.com/the-lost-art-of-heinrich-kley-volumes-1-2/). Kley is one of the great draftsman, and this is the first book published on him in the United States in 40 years. We're really excited about this one.

And in keeping with the show's DIY spirit, I also like to make something handcrafted that's available exclusively at SPX. At this year's show we'll be offering the latest in our Lost Art Chapbooks series, a cool little book on my favorite pulp artist, Edd Cartier. Again, I construct these little curios by hand, so I only end up making a few, available exclusively at shows like SPX.

We've attached a PDF flier that shows off the books we'll have at the show and provides you a handy map for finding our Lost Art Books booth. Artists and small publishers from around the world exhibit at the Small Press Expo, so we really hope you'll come check out all the cool stuff on offer. It's the craftiest, coolest book show you're ever likely to attend...

Shoot us a line if you think you'll make it!

All the best,

Joe and Ellen
co-publishers, Lost Art Books

Sunday, September 16: noon - 6:00 pm

Admission:
One day memberships: $10.00
Weekend memberships: $15.00

Collected at the door the day of the show

Why:
If you did not participate in the past, whether as a fan or an exhibitor, you missed a lot—don't be left out in 2012. 2011 was another terrific year for the show. Attendance was over 3,000 attendees and exhibitors, along with dozens of printers, distributors, retailers, and other industry professionals.
There were over 450 people registered as exhibitors and we sold over 170 exhibitor tables. SPX has a unique format of only selling exhibitor space to independent publishers and not to retailers. This provides a very intimate and friendly atmosphere for our creators and fans to mingle. At the same time, there's a wide array of programming for all to enjoy.

A bit of cartoon ephemera

bull4702

Once upon a time, ink didn't come in ballpoint pens, and you often had to 'blot' or soak up the runny stuff before your writing smeared. Companies distributed blotters with advertising on, and sometimes they had cartoons. Here's 10 of JR Williams' strip 'Bull of the Woods' and one of 'Ripley's Believe It or Not' that I picked up last weekend.

KAL's current convention work, and DC appearance

From: kevin Kallaugher:

Friends and colleagues

I wanted to share some news that I hope you will find of interest.

I have just returned from the Republican convention in Tampa. I produced for The Economist an animated sketchbook that you can view here:

 Four Editorial Cartoonists to Discuss
"Ink and Pixel: A Cartoon View of Campaign 2012," Sept. 13

Editorial cartoonists from the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New Orleans Times-Picayune and Pocho.com will discuss the highlights and challenges of creating cartoons, representing opinions from both left and right of center, during the 2012 presidential campaign.

The presentation, "Ink and Pixel: A Cartoon View of Campaign 2012," will take place at the Library of Congress at noon on Thursday, Sept. 13, in the Montpelier Room on the sixth floor of the James Madison Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington, D.C.

Sponsored by the Library's Prints and Photographs Division and the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC), the event is free and open to the public.  No tickets are needed.

The editorial cartoonists featured in the presentation are Lalo Alcaraz of Pocho.com, Steve Kelley of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Ted Rall of the Los Angeles Times and Scott Stantis of the Chicago Tribune.

Alcaraz, an award-winning Chicano artist, has created editorial cartoons for L.A. Weekly since 1992 and syndicates his work in English and Spanish through the Universal Press Syndicate.  He also draws the politically-themed Latino comic strip, "La Cucaracha."  In addition, he teaches at the Otis College of Art & Design in Los Angeles. His publications include "Migra Mouse: Political Cartoons on Immigration" (2004), "La Cucaracha" (2004), and "Latino USA: A Cartoon History" (2000) with author Ilan Stavans.

Rall is a former AAEC president and award-winning cartoonist who began posting his cartoons on New York City streets in 1986.  Through self-syndication, he started to appear in print in several publications.  In 1996, Universal Press Syndicate began distributing his work.  In addition to working as a cartoonist, Rall works as a print journalist.  His numerous publications include: "America Gone Wild" (2006), "Generalissimo El Busho: Essays and Cartoons on the Bush Years" (2004) and "2024: A Graphic Novel" (2001).  He has edited three volumes of "Attitude," the compilation of work by the Cartoonists with Attitude.

Stantis is a former AAEC president and award-winning cartoonist.  Before joining the Chicago Tribune, he worked for the Birmingham News, the Commercial Appeal in Memphis and the Arizona Republic.  A conservative by nature, Stantis is coming to Washington with a fresh campaign perspective from the Republican National Convention in Tampa.  His editorial cartoons are distributed nationally by Tribune Media Services.  In addition, he draws the daily comic strip "Prickly City," which appears in the Washington Post.  His publications include "Prickly City" (2005) and "Taking a Stantis" (2000).

Kelley is an award-winning editorial cartoonist for the New Orleans Times-Picayune who brings a right-of-center perspective to his work, which is distributed nationally by Creators Syndicate.  He also draws the comic strip "Dustin" with fellow cartoonist Jeff Parker, which is distributed by King Features Syndicate.  His publications include "Steve Kelley's Art Irritates Life" (1999).

The AAEC is the premier organization for editorial cartoonists in the United States. This presentation is part of their annual meeting, which takes place Sept. 13-15, 2012, in Washington, D.C.  It brings together leading political cartoonists, not only from the United States, but from around the world.  This year 20 cartoonists from Uzbekistan and such Near East countries as Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the West Bank have been brought to the United States by the U.S. State Department to attend the meeting.
